Several years ago, I was doing a television interview with Breakfast TV on setting the table for Christmas. The host of the show asked what colors I had chosen for my own home for holiday decor and when I replied with “Pink, orange and chartreuse,” her eyes nearly fell out of her head. The shock that it wasn’t red, green, or metallic of some shade nearly killed her. Now, I love the traditional color schemes just as much as everyone, but you have to go with a palette that works with the colors already in your home. I decided to go with something unusual because of the colors I have in my drapery and furniture. I recently featured an article about a Christmas home tour that my Calgary interior design firm took part in. We decorated the craftsman-style home in traditional hues that accentuated the home’s paint and fabric colors. Today I would like to share with you some color schemes that are more unexpected, but celebrate the season with as much vigor as any red and green Christmas wreath.

Pink is feminine, completely unexpected and just plain fun! These pink trees create a soft and romantic look. The fuschia vintage ornaments add a jolt of color that makes me smile. I mentioned earlier that I have used pink in my own Christmas decor and I am so happy with it. For my house I have combined pink, orange and chartreuse ornaments on my living room Christmas tree. Sorry – no photos to share with you today because my decorations will not be up until the Canadian House and Home photoshoot is completed in mid-December. I’ll try to post some pictures later.

Robin’s egg blue and white reminds me of a Tiffany & Co. box and what could be more festive than that? This color scheme is frosty, serene and pretty. It’s easy to find ornaments in this hue because it is such a trendy one right now.

These are not black and white photographs – the trees and ornaments are black! This color is not for the faint at heart, but I love the drama it creates and think it could be really elegant.
I encourage you to have some fun with the colors you use in your Christmas decor. The results, as you can see, are absolutely stunning! What is your favorite color scheme for the holidays? Are you a fan of tradition or do you go for a burst of unusual color?
Cheers!
Jacqueline

I really like the frosty white tree with the blue ornaments, but then I’m partial to blue.
When I decorate the tree I don’t generally stick to any one theme but most of our ornaments are green, blue, purple and black with a ton of one-offs thrown in.
Your tree sounds so pretty! I must admit, I have alot of ornaments that have sentimental value that I hang on my tree that don’t really coordinate, but it wouldn’t be Christmas without them! Thanks for your comment.
Such a pretty post Jacqueline! I can’t wait to decorate our house this coming weekend. My scheme seems to change every year but this year it will be teal/turquoise, white and red. So fun! Love Christmas… :) And I love more unexpected colour schemes too!
