Interior design by Suzanne Kasler
Staircases are such an important architectural and extremely complicated to design. There are many details which need to be determined – more than you might realize. My interior design company, Corea Sotropa Interior Design, is working on the interior design of a custom-built home in Calgary and we are currently at the stage of selecting staircase railings and details. This house will have a simple, classic style and is being built by Mission Homes. I have been collecting images of staircases which will work in this home and wanted to share with you some of my favorites.

My client and I will need to decide on metal, wood or painted wood spindles and determine their shape. We will also need to design how they will connect to the stairs. The handrail is another item that must be thought about and can be made of several different materials and contrast the spindles if required. We will have to consider if the bottom stair will flare out. A newel post (large post at the base of the stair) could be used and if so, how often will we repeat it and what is its design?
Luckily, we have already determined one thing for this staircase. The treads will be hardwood and the risers will be painted with a carpet runner running down the center. This is my favorite look because of it’s classic appeal and the rhythm that is created with each wood step. I also advocate the carpet runner since hardwood can be slippery. What are your thoughts? Do you have any favorite staircase details? I’d love to hear about them!
Cheers!
Jacqueline
