A Brush with Celebrity

By complete coincidence, my New York City trip coincided with the Fall Market at the D & D Building. I had planned on spending an afternoon checking out the designer-only showrooms hoping to find some special pieces and products to use for my projects and I couldn’t believe my luck when I stumbled upon this incredible event! I decided to take full advantage of my timing and I attended several of the seminars featuring leading interior designers, many of whom I have admired for years. Suddenly, by accident, I was among interior design royalty, and they were there to share their experiences and insight. It was too good to be true!

One of the most enjoyable presentations I attended was at the Schumacher showroom. I listened from the edge of my seat as Martyn Lawrence Bullard described his collaboration with Schumacher on his new line of fabrics. After seeing these colorful textiles at my local showroom a couple of weeks prior, I had fallen in love with his irreverent use of colour and bohemian patterns so I was dying to hear more of the story behind his journey to the collection. Plus, I am a fan of Bravo’s hit television series, Million Dollar Decorators, on which Martyn is one of the stars. (By the way, you must see the show. It is highly entertaining!)

Martyn was absolutely delightful, charming and friendly. And, he made some lasting impressions on me. He spoke of his extensive travels and about the romance and excitement of finding special pieces. His passion for fabric is evident and I found it very motivating to hear about his experiences, especially since I am a lover of fabric as well and dream of designing my own textile line one day. After the presentation, Martyn signed copies of his new book, Live, Love & Decorate, which highlights his signature style and the many celebrity clients he has decorated for over the years. I got myself a signed copy and he was kind enough to pose for a photo (above). Meeting this rock star designer in real life was one of the highlights of my trip, and something I won’t soon forget! Thanks so much to Schumacher for an incredible event and to Martyn for an afternoon of inspiration.
